Police - see-no-evil

Following a further period of no response from the No10 web team in relation to the ‘Petition Against UK Custody Deaths’ which closed on 18th October 2008, we are now going to be writing directly to the PM, Gordon Brown, to raise our concerns.

Please consider writing to the PM yourself.

THE DEMANDS

  • Deaths in police custody must be investigated by a body that is genuinely independent of the police, unlike the recently established ‘Independent’ Police Complaints Commission.’
  • Prison deaths must be subject to a system of properly funded investigation that is completely independent of the Prison Service.
  • Officers involved in custody deaths be suspended until investigations are completed.
  • Prosecutions of officers should automatically follow ‘unlawful killing’ verdicts at inquests.
  • Officers responsible for deaths should face criminal charges, even if retired.
  • Police forces are made accountable to the communities that they serve.
  • Legal Aid and full disclosure of information be made to the relatives of the victims.

Many thanks for your continued support.
